One year ago at Newport Folk Festival, Margo Price sparked a social media firestorm when she looked out at the crowd and declared, “F*ck ICE” before hurling into her rendition of Woody Guthrie’s human rights classic “Deportee.” This moment dominated headlines and timelines for days, but for anyone who has followed Margo’s career, it wasn’t surprising. She has spent her life and music standing up for the people and causes she believes in, regardless of the consequences.
Days of Unrest collects songs from throughout that journey. From prison reform and marijuana law reform to farmers’ rights, immigrant rights, and the struggles of working people around the world, these recordings reflect the issues Margo has championed both on and off the stage.
The collection also traces a lineage of protest music through some of its most powerful voices. “Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos),” written by Woody Guthrie and performed here with folk icon Joan Baez and Memphis Mariachi, connects Margo’s work to generations of artists who have used song to advocate for migrant workers and human dignity. Other key covers draw from similarly rich traditions, including Bob Dylan’s “Maggie’s Farm,” a landmark anthem of resistance and independence that she performers at FarmAid 2025, and “De Colores,” the beloved folk song long associated with farmworker organizing and solidarity. Few artists have remained as consistently engaged, outspoken, and uncompromising.
